ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning or ear reshaping surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the size, shape, or position of the ears. It’s commonly used to correct protruding ears, asymmetrical ear shapes, oversized ears, or to repair torn or stretched earlobes caused by trauma or heavy earrings.

Many people choose ear correction surgery to achieve a more natural, balanced facial appearance and boost their self-confidence.

At your free consultation, our board-certified surgeons will create a custom treatment plan designed to help you reach your aesthetic goals safely and effectively.

Reshaping or repair?

Otoplasty can address two distinct types of concern. Both can be performed individually or together.

Ear Reshaping

Repositions or reshapes the ears to correct prominent, protruding, or asymmetrical ears for a more balanced and natural appearance.

Earlobe Repair

Corrects torn or stretched earlobes caused by trauma or heavy earrings, restoring a more proportional look.

A thorough consultation determines which approach – or a combined strategy – is appropriate for you.

CANDIDACY

Is otoplasty ight for you?

Otoplasty is a great option for individuals who feel self-conscious about the size, shape, or position of their ears. The procedure can improve facial harmony, deliver natural-looking results tailored to your features, and provide a significant boost in confidence.

Results are permanent – once the ears are reshaped and healed, the changes are long-lasting. Recovery is quick, with most patients returning to normal activities within about a week.

Otoplasty may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

The goal is never to sell surgery. It is to ensure any procedure recommended is safe, appropriate, and likely to deliver a meaningful result.

THE PROCEDURE

What happens during surgery?

Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the procedure’s complexity and your preference. The entire procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours and is performed as an outpatient surgery, meaning you’ll go home the same day.

Ear reshaping

1-2 hours

Discreet incisions are made behind the ear or within the natural folds of the ear. The underlying cartilage is sculpted or repositioned to achieve the desired contour and angle. Techniques may include folding, trimming, or suturing the cartilage for a more natural appearance. The incisions are carefully closed using fine sutures to support healing and reduce scarring.

Ear repair

30-60 minutes

If earlobe repair is required, small incisions are made to correct tears or stretched lobes, restoring a more proportional look. A light dressing or headband is applied to protect the ears and help maintain their new position during healing.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Recovery and aftercare

Most patients are able to return to work within 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the nature of their job. Full recovery typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, during which time swelling and bruising will gradually subside.

PHASE 1

Week 1

A light dressing or headband protects the ears and maintains their new position. Some swelling and mild discomfort is normal and manageable. Avoid sleeping on your ears or any pressure on the surgical area. Dressings are typically worn for around 7 days.

PHASE 2

Weeks 2-3

Dressings are removed. Swelling continues to subside and the ears begin to settle into their new position. You can usually return to most normal activities. Avoid contact sports or anything that could impact the ears.

PHASE 3

Weeks 4-6

Final results become apparent. Scars behind the ears continue to fade and become barely noticeable. Results are permanent – once the ears are reshaped and healed, the changes are long-lasting, as long as the ears aren’t exposed to injury or excessive pulling.

You’ll receive a personalized aftercare plan with clear instructions on wound care, medications, and lifestyle adjustments to support optimal healing.

Yes. Otoplasty is often performed on children ages 5 and up, once the ears are fully developed and the cartilage is firm enough to reshape.
As with any surgical procedure, otoplasty carries some risks. These may include infection, which is rare and treatable with antibiotics, scarring which is minimal and hidden behind the ears, and temporary numbness or discomfort around the surgical site. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon can significantly reduce these risks.
