ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to reshape and refine the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
For many patients, this is not purely a cosmetic decision. Excess skin on the upper eyelids can contribute to heaviness, fatigue, irritation, and in some cases reduced peripheral vision. Lower eyelid concerns – such as puffiness, prominent fat pads, or loose skin – can create a persistently tired appearance regardless of how rested you are.
The procedure is highly personalised. Every patient’s anatomy, skin quality, and goals are different, which is why a thorough consultation and clinical assessment is essential before any treatment is recommended.
Upper vs lower blepharoplasty
Upper and lower eyelid surgery address different concerns and are planned very differently.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Focuses on removing excess skin and tissue from the upper eyelids which can create a heavy, hooded, or tired appearance and, in some cases, interfere with vision.
- Hooded or drooping upper eyelids
- Excess skin resting on the lash line
- Heaviness or fatigue around the eyes
- Impaired peripheral vision
Lower Blepharoplasty
Targets under-eye concerns such as puffiness, prominent fat pads, hollowing, or loose skin. Tailored to avoid an over-tight or hollowed result.
- Under-eye bags or puffiness
- Dark circles caused by shadowing
- Loose or crepey skin beneath the eyes
- Tear trough hollowing
A thorough consultation determines which approach – or a combined strategy – is appropriate for you.
CANDIDACY
Is eyelid surgery right for you?
Blepharoplasty may be appropriate if you are experiencing:
- Excess upper eyelid skin creating a hooded appearance
- Puffiness or bags beneath the eyes that do not improve with rest
- Skin laxity making you look older or more tired than you feel
- Eyelid skin limiting your field of vision
- Non-surgical treatments that haven't delivered lasting results
The goal is never to sell surgery. It is to ensure any procedure recommended is safe, appropriate, and likely to deliver a meaningful result.
THE PROCEDURE
What happens during surgery?
Blepharoplasty is typically performed as a day-case procedure, meaning you return home the same day.
The approach depends on whether upper, lower, or both eyelids are being treated. Both procedures are performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic depending on the extent of treatment.
Upper blepharoplasty
45-90 minutes
An incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat are carefully removed or repositioned. The incision sits within the eyelid crease, making it virtually invisible once fully healed.
Lower blepharoplasty
1-2 hours
An incision is made just below the lower lash line. For patients where fat redistribution is the primary goal, a transconjunctival approach – through the inside of the lower eyelid – may be used, leaving no visible external scar at all.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Recovery and aftercare
Most patients return to normal daily activities within 7–10 days. Full healing and the final result may take several weeks to become fully apparent.
PHASE 1
Week 1
Swelling and bruising peaks around day 2–3 then gradually improves. Cold compresses, head elevation, and prescribed eye drops help manage discomfort. Sutures are usually removed within 5–7 days.
PHASE 2
Weeks 2-4
Most visible bruising resolves. You can usually return to work and light social activities. Sunglasses and sun protection are recommended when outdoors.
PHASE 3
Months 1-3
Subtle swelling continues to settle. The final shape and contour of the eyelids becomes apparent. Scars within the eyelid crease continue to fade and flatten.
A thorough consultation determines which approach, or a combined strategy, is appropriate for you.
Frequently asked questions

Will there be visible scarring?
